http://moroagh.wordpress.com/2007/06/27/academia-plays-mmos-2-how-social-is-wow/

An interesting article that discussing the social nature of wow. The most interesting part for me was “Of course at the same time, with level the involvement in guilds rises as well. 90% are guilded above level 43, compared to an overall average of 66%.” A much higher guild rate that I would have imagined.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MMO

Just the wiki entry for mmos. Contains a good overview of the nature of mmos and the various sub sections of mmos.

A fairly in depth article well backed up with stats.

http://au.gamespot.com/news/6162382.html

An online poll conducted about mmos. It contains conclusive evidence on addiction in mmos “A Nottingham Trent research study of 7,000 online gamers showed that 12 percent exhibit at least three of the diagnostic criteria of addiction as outlined by the World Health Organization. These include: craving, withdrawal symptoms, loss of control, and neglect of other activities.”

A mmo case study on the structure and make up of mmo makes for a good read. No real hard information but tracks the development process well.

Really the be all and end all for information on mmos. Unparalleled in detail and content.

http://gamasutra.com/features/20060822/clark_01.shtml

A very interesting feature article by gamasutra. “There are a million little pieces working together in these games. Understanding this process not only holds the potential for helping the people with real gaming problems. Research within prototypical game worlds may have real implications for helping people with other kinds of non-game addictions.”

An article on mmo in education. Playing MGS games to become effective politicians sounds pretty good. Tongue in check but interesting none the less.

Mmos beginning to virtually play themselves. Don’t have time to play WoW? Not enough time to raid? Blizzard has never made it easier to feel connected to Azeroth without actually playing. Another heavily wwo inspired article.
